A day at the Getty

For my museum assignment I chose to visit the Getty of Los Angeles. Here their featured gallery was a gallery that showed the master Rembrandt compared to the works of his pupils.

The drawings that I really liked within this gallery was the ones by Rembrandt and his pupil Gerbrand van den Eeckhout. [Above] I really liked Rembrandt's version because of the way he does every little detail and each pencil stroke has a purpose. The eyes are not detailed like Eeckhout's version and she has no expression. It's amazing how simple Rembrandt's drawing is compared to his pupils, the lady is covered in fabric and has no face, where as Eeckhout's is showing his whole body and trying to capture some kind of expression in his drawing.

As I was walking around the Getty I went into a room with two paintings by Luca Carlevarijas called The "Bucintoro" Departing from the Bacino di San Marco [Top] and A Regatta on the Grand Canal in Honor of Frederick IV, King of Denmark. [Bottom]. In the room these two paintings were hung up opposite of each other (one on the left and one on the right). This arrangement made it feel as if I were in the middle of the scene running around with all the chaos that is going on.

Side Table, Attributed to Johann Paul Schor
[Above] This piece of decorative art I thought was the most interesting piece at the museum. Even though it is called "Side Table" it really has no way at can actually function as a working table. The more I look at this piece the more complex and intricate it seems to become.

I really enjoyed the limited time I had to spend at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. I am hoping that in the future I can visit more museums and learn to appreciate art even more

First Blog

This is my first ever blog in my life. Created it for a course requirement for my Philosophy of the Arts class at Cal Poly Pomona. Here I will be posting works of art that I like or dislike. Hopefully it turns out good.
